Area Wildlife
Researchers in the early 50's discovered that wolves and coyotes will respond to the human imitation of a howl. Sitting around the campfire bellowing in unison to the far off Puma Hills, is nothing short of spine tingling when the eerie song that returns from the deep woods in the distance reverberates across the open valley.
Your first clue to the abundance of wildlife in the area is the spotting scope positioned in the great room aimed at Spinney Mountain and the Continental Divide. It is not uncommon to see entire herds of antelope just off the front deck. The area used to be the stomping grounds of the Ute Indians who came here for the big game. They named the area "Bayou Saliduo", or salt marsh, which attracted large herds of game. In the 21st century, tourists come for the same reason...........the wildlife viewing is exceptional! As the entire area is what is known as "free range" for cattle crazing, be careful when driving as the donkeys will come right up to the car window. Also, if you leave the gate open the cows, will..... ahem, leave you little presents!
